Bolt is the new hatchback from the well known automaker, Tata Motors. It is based on the X1 platform and underpins the Indica Vista but it is a completely new car in terms of features and overall design. It is the hatchback sibling of Tata Zest which is a sub 4m sedan. It offers several segment first features and employs a completely new design language for the interiors as well as the exteriors. Tata hopes to revamp its brand image with this latest offering.
From the Outside:
Tata Bolt features edgy styling. It has sleek shaped head lamps that stretch from the centre of the bonnet to the grille and lend it an aggressive front facade. The rear has rounded edges and gets more premium styling cues. There is a slight power bulge on the hood and the bumper hosts an inverted smile.
From the Inside:
The black and white interior colour combination looks striking and inviting. The lower spec variant uses sports beige interiors. The fit and finish of the knobs, materials and switches is excellent. The redesigned dashboard also looks good. The Harman touchscreen multimedia system, rugby shoulder seats, speed dependent volume control, voice recognition and SMS readouts are some of the other notable features of the cabin. The car offers a generous amount of space as well.
The Mechanical Aspect:
Tata Bolt is powered by a 1.2-litre Revtron MPFi turbocharged engine with first in class multi drive mode that offers 84bhp of maximum power at 5000rpm and 140Nm of peak torque at 1750-3500rpm. The diesel versions are powered by the 4 cylinder, 1.3-litre turbocharged Quadrajet diesel engine that produces 75PS of power and 190Nm of troque. Transmission options on this hatchback include five-speed manual as well as AMT, that is a first for Tata in this segment.
The Tata Bolt petrol variant of the car offers a healthy 18-19kmpl of mileage while the quadrajet diesel engine delivers 24kmpl of mileage.
This Tata offering offers better driving dynamics due to the presence of drive-by-wore technology, electronic power assist steering and ABS. The improved suspension combined with a zero pivot subframe ensures that the ride is utmost comfortable and butter smooth. The car comes with ABS with EBD, central locking, parking sensors, side impact protection and keyless entry and safety features.
Price Tag and Rivals:
Tata has priced this beast within a price range of Rs. 4.6lakh to Rs. 6.6lakh. It is being offered in four petrol and three diesel variants. It will face competition from the likes of Maruti Suzuki Swift, Chevrolet Sail, Hyundai Grand i10 and Volkswagen Polo.
